By the late 1940s America had witnessed almost three decades of radio history, and many stations had become well known for their country barn dances.
Located in Mount Airy, North Carolina, WPAQ Radio aired its first broadcast in February 1948 and has since served its community by broadcasting the music of the region, specializing in old-time and bluegrass. My essay argues that assumptions of normative identity in Americana music make it an attractive and powerful musical space for transgender and queerly gendered artists to play with both the sociomusical identifications around Americana and expectations of “the transgender narrative." Musicians discussed: Rae Spoon, Joe Stevens/Coyote Grace, Namoli Brennet, Tylan Greenstein/Girlyman, Actor Slash Model Yet several of these musicians have come to their gender and genre identifications simultaneously, describing a cogenerative relationship. Roots functions through assertions of authenticity and sincerity, framing itself as a simple and historical music “of the people.” Meanwhile, biased views of transgender people assume deceit, while radical queer voices tend to be heard via genres linked to rebellion or camp. This combination of gender and genre may seem unexpected. “TransAmericana” describes a contemporary sociomusical phenomenon of transgender and queerly gendered musicians who have chosen American roots genres including country and folk as their expressive material.

By scattering these songs throughout a bluegrass performance, the journey toward home becomes the pathway by which all the troubles of betrayal, heartbreak, conflict, and hard times are borne and transformed.
While expected themes of repentance and faith run throughout these gospel songs, the progressive form of home that is lost and then recovered sets up a secular analogy to the story of sin and redemption so common in American Protestant Evangelicalism. Referencing Kenneth Burke's early theories of rhetorical identification and symbolic appeal, this study reads the inclusion of gospel songs in stage and recorded performance as a secularized means of self-defi nition: singers and listeners are linked as people with common origins and destinations.
The framework gives shape and meaning to the troubled aspects of life that make up much of the content of bluegrass songs, sacred and secular. The gospel songs of Ralph Stanley offer solace by means of identifi cation with the singer's losses and struggles, but they also offer a metaphoric framework of journey and homecoming found in many folk and country songs.
